Independant artist — Nieuwrode, Belgium be

Charel Cambré

Charel is a Flemish illustrator, cartoonist and scriptwriter who also studied animation. He has worked for several French and German studios, for the weekly review «Spike and Suzy», and has signed two albums putting the Pfaff family on stage. His style is not unlike Franquin’s. He is also to be credited for a few comic strips and short stories, amongst which Jump (9 albums), awarded «best Flemish comic strip», and more recently Albert & Co, a comic strip depicting a certain Albert…

An efficient stroke, a perceptive observation of family relations give him the material to write his gags, and his subtle humor crystallizes royal adventures without any nastiness. The crowned heads can’t escape his sagacity when in comical and funny situations, hence these images and gags.

When you’re King of Belgium, it’s not easy everyday, between the kids and the kingdom. «Strength Through Unity» is the national motto of his country ; Charel succeeds in uniting royal seriousness with cartoon humor. Hats off to the artist!
